How it works

Olfaction (smell) has an immediate effect on heart-rate, breath, the nervous system and relaxation-levels in the body. Early yogis knew this and the practice of using fragrant substances to enhance yoga was called gandha.

They used tree barks, gums, resins to produce a positive effect on the mind and body, boosting health, vitality, clarity and calm – enhancing the yogic state.

Gandha has been used by yogis to enhance their practice for over 4000 years. It works in 2 ways:

1. It directly accesses the back (limbic) brain to get you into a more yogic state: The herbs pass through the olfactory system to immediately calm and deepen the breath, quieten mental chatter, reduce stress levels, balance hormones, prepare you mentally and physically for practice.

2. It brings your weekly class into your every day.
Fact: If you have a joyous moment surrounded by any particular smell, that smell will always bring you joy. Olfaction (smell) re-creates bodily states. Imagine you are in yoga class and reach a wonderful state of calm. At the same time you are subliminally aware of the smell of the yoga oil. From then on, every time you smell that oil, your body will be inclined to return to that state of being. This works even if the smell is only in your subconscious. Actually it is because it is in your subconscious.

Non-yogis can get all the benefits of the primary way that they work above.

Yoga oils

Unique yoga oils from Yogandha (Ireland). 100% natural – organic and fair-trade where possible. Read more about the ingredients. Boxes are post-recycled and glue-free so are fully compostable.

Using fragrant substances to enhance yoga is called gandha and this practice has been used by yogis for over 4000 years. The purpose of these oils is basically to enhance the practice of yoga folk (and the calm of non-yogis) and help to bring the mindfulness of practice into your every day.

Ground

Apanam dhehi - May the downward moving energy be nourished.

Handy and healthful roll-on yoga oil that will ground and relax you before yoga practice and when you need calm.

How to use, with practice:
Apply to your pulse points - wrists, neck, temples, and 3rd eye if you like. Can apply before asana or meditation. Or after asana and before final relaxation.

How to use, outside of practice:
Carry around with you - keep where you'll see it - in your bag, your desk, your car. Apply when you need to be calm and when you feel yourself getting a bit stressed (watch the breath, it'll tell you; as will a raised voice, frenzied mind, clenched knuckles...). Very useful before you need to do something that you need to be 'present' for - a meeting, a talk, life.

Contains:

  • Sandalwood – this has been grounding yogis for over four thousand years.
  • Frankincense – which deepens and regulates the breath; very suitable for pranayama and stress-relief.
  • Myrrh – used to strengthen and enhance spirituality.
  • Vetiver – a deep-rooted Indian grass; plants with deep roots ground and earth us.

10 ml. Use within 6 months of opening.

Cautions:
For external use only. Do not use during pregnancy. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Black pepper can be sensitizing to some skins. Monks used it for focus and perseverance.

Chakra: This works mainly on the muladhara (base) chakra. That’s why the box is red.

Price: 150 dkk.* (in the yoga shala)

Balance

Vyanam dhehi - May the circulating energy be nourished.

Handy and healthful roll-on yoga oil that will balance you before yoga practice and when you need balance (excellent for hormonal balance).

Apply when you need balance, particularly signs of hormonal turbulence. You know what they are. A lovely comment about this product was by Naomi Stadlen who said "it enhances my pleasure in being a woman". Every woman should have jasmine close by.

Contains:

  • Jasmine – the white flower garland seen outside Indian temples and draped around the neck of the dancing Shiva; it is balancing at the very deepest level.
  • Cypress – balancing to all of the fluids in the body and at the more subtle level it balances prana (chi, energy).
  • Clary sage – balances the pituitary gland, the master gland of the body.
  • Coriander – contains phyto-estrogen, a plant-based substance similar to the body's estrogen; very useful for hormonal balance.

10 ml. Use within 6 months of opening.

Cautions:
For external use only. Do not use during pregnancy. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Clary sage has been known to exaggerate the effects of alcohol on the body. Every herb in here is an aphrodisiac. That wasn’t the original intention, but is probably because of the affinity with the swadisthana chakra. Many spiritual oils are aphrodisiacs; seems a contradiction, but isn't really. Yoga means union.

Chakra: This works mainly on the swadisthana (sacral) chakra. That’s why the box is orange.

Price: 150 dkk.* (in the yoga shala)

Salute

Pranam dhehi - May the upward moving energy be nourished.

Handy and healthful roll-on yoga oil that will energize you before yoga practice or just when you need a lift.

How to use, with practice:
Apply to your pulse points - wrists, neck, temples, and 3rd eye if you like. Apply before asana. Can use for meditation if falling asleep in meditation is an issue. Not recommended to use for final relaxation.

How to use, outside of practice:
Carry around with you - keep where you'll see it - in your bag, your desk, your car. Apply when you need to be alert and when you feel yourself getting tired and you need a healthy lift (much healthier than a coffee!).

Contains:

  • Grapefruit – fresh and uplifting and said to have an affinity with the pineal gland which governs our bio-rhythms.
  • Bergamot – both uplifting and balancing, great for stress-relief.
  • Rosemary – very stimulating and has always been considered to offer some form of protection (boosts the immune system).
  • Ravensara – a gentler member of the eucalyptus family.

10 ml. Use within 6 months of opening.

Cautions:
For external use only. Do not use during pregnancy. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Avoid in epilepsy. Avoid using this product in the evening as it may disturb sleep in some people. Rosemary wakes up the brain.

Chakra: This works mainly on the manipura (solar plexus) chakra. That's why the box is yellow.

Price: 150 dkk.* (in the yoga shala)

Muscle soothe

Anamaya dhehi - May my body be nourished.

Full body yoga oil formulated to relax the muscles after yoga practice, while maintaining tone. It will soothe and support the muscular, digestive, nervous and respiratory systems.

How to use, with practice:
This is an all-over oil, so you can apply as liberally as you like. If you are heading out to class, rubbing on your muscles before will get them warm and supple. The smell is not overpowering. Rubbing on your arm, shoulders and calves can really ease the muscles after a strong class - while maintaining tone.

How to use, outside of practice:
If you have a strong practice early in the morning, apply all over the night before to get your muscles ready. Can re-apply in the morning (as oil cleans, you might even get away without a shower!). If you have really worked the muscles, apply liberally all over soon after - even better if you can, squirt a lot into the bath, relax in the bath, then get out and cover yourself in it. Your muscles will thank you.

How to use, abhyanga:
For maximum benefit, use mindfully with abhyanga - a simple healthful self-massage. Here's a free abhyanga guide (pdf).

Contains:

  • Ethically sourced and organic sweet marjoram, ginger, petit grain, cedar wood, lavender, vitamin e in organic coconut and arnica.

125 ml. Use within 6 months of opening.
