Class description

This class has special focus on deep relaxation, yoga nidra. The yummy, 5-10 minutes long relaxation at the end of the other classes is the super star in these classes - awarded more time, layers, and debt and hence with a more powerful effect. Approx. 20-30 minutes are dedicated to yoga nidra and during the rest of the class we will be moving (in a gentle flow) and breathing.


What is yoga nidra - and what can it do for me?

Literally, yoga nidra means 'yoga sleep' and it is an astonishing, accessible and totally effortless yoga practice that anyone can do, by themselves, in a class, or by using audio recordings.


Yoga nidra is usually done lying down and does not involve any physical movement. It promotes deep healing and very profound rest at every level of being: physical, mental, and emotional. It does this because it works systematically through each aspect of the human being: first, establishing deep physical rest that allows for recuperation and the restoration of the body to a state of homeostasis, or balance at the biochemical level.


Because yoga nidra promotes the body's natural tendency towards homeostasis, it enables those systems of the body which are often out of synch or disturbed to move towards optimum functioning. E.g. often during yoga nidra one hears a contented rumbling in the gut, as the peristalsis in the smooth muscle of the digestive tract resumes effective functioning; often erratic breathing settles quite naturally into a restful depth and rhythm, whilst the heart rate also comes to an optimum level; and often tension headaches or eye aches disappears as the muscles of the neck relax, and/or the strain in the eyes is relieved.


Once the opening stages of yoga nidra enable the body to relax and function optimally, then practitioners are able to restore vitality and emotional stability. The combination of deep physical rest, revitalisation and the settling of emotions and thoughts results in improved productivity, heightened intelligence and enhanced creativity.


Thus yoga nidra is effective in the relief of insomnia, anxiety, and other stress-related problems. Yoga nidra is also helpful in the management of chronic and acute pain. It is useful in treatment of infertility, to relieve menstrual cramps, and pre-menstrual tension. And a great tool for self-enquiry.


Yoga nidra is an adaptogenic practice. This means that the practice itself has an innate capacity to adapt itself to the needs of the individual. For example, if you are simply very tired and finding it hard to sleep, then yoga nidra will help you sleep; but if you are looking to improve productivity, then a short daily session of yoga nidra will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to resume work with a will; and if you are looking to boost creativity then yoga nidra can be used to address specific problems or challenges in any business or creative endeavour.
