Yin yoga is a quiet, meditative practice where you slowly get into supine or seated postures that are typically held for 3-5 minutes with as little muscle activity as possible. This affects the connective tissue and the joints, increasing flexibility and dissolving blockages in the energy system of the body, the meridians. According to traditional Chinese medicine the life energy "Ch'i" flows in these meridians and if they are blocked imbalances will appear in the body.
In Yin yoga we work with the body at several levels: both the physical body and the energy body as well as with thoughts and feelings. You may feel more vulnerable during a Yin yoga practice but afterwards you often feel strengthened and well balanced.
The content in the Yin yoga classes will vary from one class to the other and also depending on who is teaching:
Yin yoga is a perfect complement to the more dynamic (yang) yoga styles like e.g. Astanga vinyasa yoga.
Yin yoga is not suitable for pregnant students.
