5-day intensive with focus on pranayama and hatha philosophy

Gain a deeper understanding of yoga to enhance your practice and skills of teaching. Theoretical explanation based upon direct experience can stimulate your intellect and cause you to reflect deeper on your practice. The outcome is greater understanding and a stronger connection to your self through your own practice.

This week workshop will highlight:

  • Asana: The key principles of asana, the integrity of posture, which serve as the base for further practice of pranayama and meditation. Your questions on postures from any of the series are welcome for exploration.
  • Pranayama: Full practice of pranayama and theoretical explanation of the techniques and their benefits. In addition, your pranic pulse will be read over a number of days to determine where you are at and your personal pranayama prescribed to you at the end of the program. Paul has apprenticed with Tiwariji and this lineage of masters in pranayama where traditional teaching has always included pulse analysis to work specifically with the student.
  • Philosophy: Hatha Yoga Pradipika will be our main focus but reference to the other texts and the classical Patanjali Yoga Sutras will also be included. These hatha texts contains many of the keys to better understand and perform practice of asana and pranayama. Insight in to where this grows to in terms of meditation will be given.

Monday to Friday, 19-23 April 2010

  • 07:30-09:00 Pranayama practice (with pulse analysis)
  • 09:00-11:00 Asana practice, alternating between mysore style and explorative led
  • 12:30-14:00 Discussion on asana and pranayama
  • 14:00-15:30 Philosophy
  • 15:30-16:00 Pranayama practice

Please note, we may finish earlier on Friday 23 April (i.e. only a very short break after practice and one seminar) as Paul has to catch a plane.

About Paul Dallaghan

Paul is a senior student of Sri O.P. Tiwari, one of the few remaining classical yogis and masters of pranayama. He has practiced pranayama for many years under Tiwariji's direct guidance which has led to deep insight and understanding of practice. Paul is also certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Ashtanga vinyasa yoga. He uses this as a base for intelligence in asana to be applied appropriately for the student. Paul continues with his regular routine of asana, pranayama and meditation on a daily basis and through love of the subject matter keeps up a keen study of the classical texts and scientific interpretations of what goes on in yoga.

Paul grew up in Dublin, Ireland. After completing his degree at Trinity College he was bound for New York where his life in yoga began. Since 2001 he has been in Asia between Thailand and India with a primary focus on practice and study. With his wife, Jutima, they opened Yoga Thailand and continue to enjoy living there. Especially since the arrival of two lovely sons, Sean and Dylan. He knows firsthand about raising a family, earning a living and keeping a sincere connection with practice and internal development. This practical experience and love of the subject matter he shares with joy, intelligence and humour.

Please visit Yoga Thailand and Centered Yoga Institute for more details.
